Case Study 9-Business Administration and Management

R started her Business Administration Apprenticeship straight from school, at the age of 16. R progressed well, both in her workplace and on her apprenticeship and moved very quickly on to her Advanced Business Administration Apprenticeship.  This was more of a challenge to R and she needed to take on additional tasks and responsibilities in order to achieve the qualification.Shortly after finishing her Advanced Apprenticeship R was promoted to Centre Co-ordinator at a local company and became an essential component of their working. R worked in this job role for a while before progressing on to the Advanced Apprenticeship in Management, which she successfully completed, along with achieving the prestigious ILM Award in First Line Management. Job roles changed with her employer and R started working for ETS and as a Tutor has progressed to the DTTLS course.  R now teaches on the ILM course.

When I left school I wanted to go straight into employment and gained a job with great development opportunities. I took a job as an Office Junior in the training department at a Council Company and undertook basic administration tasks.  Over the next 5 years I was given the opportunity to take on many new tasks and responsibilities within the division.  At the age of 20 I was promoted to Centre Co-ordinator and was jointly responsible for the running of the NVQ delivery. During my time at with the company, I took up the opportunity to undertake the Foundation and Advanced Apprenticeship in Business Administration and the Advanced Apprenticeship in Management. The knowledge and skills which I developed on these programmes was invaluable to my progression.  Whilst at the company I had shown an interest in doing NVQ assessing and teaching. Unfortunately they were unable to offer me a position doing this work, therefore I took a job at Education Training Skills as an Education Officer.  I am thoroughly enjoying my role at ETS however I felt that I needed to develop my skills and knowledge in my teaching role.  Therefore in January I enrolled at Exeter College to undertake, The Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector. This is a level 5 qualification that will take me 2 years to complete. Without the support and training which I was given during my time on the Apprenticeships, I don’t think I would have got the chance to progress onto a course in Higher Education at this stage of my life.
